Virtual FCST Training: "Calling It Quits - OR In Whose Best Interest"
The Ethics in Continuing vs Terminating a Collaborative Case
Presenter: Calma Collective - Louise
Is there a time to ''Call it Quits" in a collaborative case? When there’s a lack of progress? When there’s impasse? Has the integrity of the collaborative process deteriorated? Has shuttle diplomacy taken over communication? How do we determine when it’s time to call it quits?
The question you should be asking is: “In whose best interest is it to continue?” How do you know termination should be considered? How do you address team dynamics, client dynamics, emotions of the professionals and the clients, the timing and process of termination, and the legal and ethical issues involved?
This program will focus on:
- Understanding the best practices and ethics involved in continuing collaborations that no longer maintain the integrity of the defined process and in terminating those cases.
- Process values, especially self-determination and interest-based negotiation.
- We will review existing standards and you will be provided with Dos and Don’ts of Termination.
- How and when to have the difficult conversation(s) about whether to terminate or withdraw from your collaborative cases, how to transition your clients to a different process, and how to bring in a new professional.
- We will consider conversations with the collaborative team as well as your clients.
Participants will have a chance to role-play, discuss case scenarios, and ask questions. Numerous materials will be provided.
