"The Lost Art of Asking: How to Use Questions to Open Up Possibilities"

Asking good questions is a vital skill in our collaborative toolbox. We ask questions to facilitate dialogue and learn. We intend to be helpful and open, so when we get a defensive reaction, we wonder, What the heck?  A perfectly reasonable request for information suddenly leads to an argument about what happened - which is a great lead-in to the Blame Game.

You think (or say) “I’m just trying to help!” (cue the exasperated tone).

In this workshop, we will learn how can we use questions to work with resistance and engage more productively with our clients and collaborative teams. We will learn what’s missing in our current negotiating model and practice how to do more asking, and less telling, to get at what is underneath resistance.   You will leave the workshop with practical tools you can immediately apply to your work, and your life.

We will challenge ourselves to consider:

  • What kinds of questions help defuse defensiveness?
  • How to ask without telling?  (Yes – it’s a thing!)
  • Does it matter who does the asking?
  • What judgments are hidden (or apparent!) in our questions?
  • How to use questions to open up possibilities and find creative solutions.
